Chirstmas Party 2013: Giving Back
In place of our usual monthly meeting, we held our annual Christmas Party at Molly Malone’s. The event was open to all members. The band Lachlan provided the music for the evening. While the members and their guests mingled and enjoyed the buffet, they had the opportunity to enter a raffle for various gifts donated.
The main focus of the evening was the presentation of the donation to the charities our organization selected.
Bellarmine President Dr. McGowan accepted our gift of $5,000 to help underwrite a scholarship for one of their students’ opportunity to study in Ireland.
Once again this year we were pleased to donate to the STAR program. The presentation of $5,000 to Darrell Griffith, spokesman for University of Louisville Autism Foundation, was made to enable more autistic children to participate in the program at the University of Louisville.
Two new charities received $1,000 apiece – Wreaths Across America and Wounded Warrior Project.
Our donation to Wounded Warrior Project (not pictured) is earmarked to benefit soldiers in the state of Kentucky. This national charity was founded in response to the numbers of wounded veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. For every 1 soldier killed, 7 more sustain injuries. In the 12 years since the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the subsequent military operations, 51,778 soldiers have been wounded, with an additional 320,000 soldiers suffering varying degrees of traumatic brain injuries and 400,000 having PTSD. Funds raised go to support treatment and training for these courageous veterans.
Our donation to Wreaths was accepted by Donna Betson, the state coordinator, who helped raise funds to place wreaths on the graves of the over 2,500 Kentucky veterans buried at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery.
The event concluded. It was widely noted that everyone had a lovely time and that it was a much more comfortable setting than the deck the previous year.
The January meeting is in the Shibeen at Molly Malone’s on Baxter at 7pm on January 15, 2014.
